In Good Company – why profit with purpose matters

Alex Birtles

In the modern business landscape, consumer and employee expectations have evolved. It’s become increasingly evident that the pursuit of a greater purpose is not just a choice, but a necessity for sustained businesses success.

In this session, Alex Birtles, Co-Founder and CEO of an award-winning purpose-driven start-up, will explore how we need to look beyond traditional Corporate Social Responsibility to a world where positive impact and commercial success are intrinsically linked.

Through practical insights and real-world examples, this discussion will shed light on the challenges and opportunities that arise during this crucial transition and why the most successful businesses of the future, will be those who deliver profit with purpose

Biography

Alex is the Co-Founder and CEO of In Good Company, a tech-for-good startup which makes it quick and easy for people to find the best ethical and sustainable businesses and experiences around them.

A Londoner born and bred, Alex spent nine years holding a range of Director-level positions at TalkTalk, where she ran the Digital Department, Customer Loyalty and helped set up a not-for-profit to help parents protect their children online. She also worked in the public sector on the Covid-19 response and a £250m programme to get children from low income families online at home.

Alex is a firm believer in businesses doing well by doing good and the power of technology to help make the world a better place.

It was her own experience of discovering social enterprises and other good companies – and realising what hard work it was to actually find them – that led to her co-founding In Good Company in late 2021 with her business partner, Sarah Kingston.

Whilst it’s brilliant that there are so many solutions to help us buy more sustainably online, Alex wanted to focus on ‘in real life’ experiences, helping people easily find places to go in the community which have a mission over and above making a profit.

Outside of ‘work’ Alex’s interests are wide-ranging. She’s an enthusiastic community gardener and loves sober raving. Alex has also spoken openly over the years about her challenges with mental health and is passionate about mentoring women in business, especially other female founders.

In 2023 she was named as one of the Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs in the UK by f:Entrepreneur, one of the Top 100 female social entrepreneurs by Pioneers Post and Natwest and one of the 23 Most Influential Womxn by Startups Magazine.
