What a huge pleasure it is to welcome back Joshua Rozenberg KC (hon) who exactly 2 years ago gave a memorable presentation entitled Enemies of the People?
As a reminder ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE was the Daily Mail headline on 4th November 2016. It referred to three senior judges who had ruled, in effect, that Brexit could not be triggered without an act of parliament. At the time, Liz Truss was lord chancellor and justice secretary. Later, one of the judges said she had been ‘completely and absolutely wrong’ to think she was under no constitutional duty to defend the judiciary against unwarranted attacks.
Joshua posed the questions “What challenges will the incoming lord chancellor face? And how will the new prime minister restore public confidence after succeeding a colleague who has played fast and loose with the rule of law?”
That was then. Two years on a ‘river has gone under the bridge’ and the legal challenges remain undiminished and Joshua will acquaint us with those he sees as foremost and most challenging
As said, we are therefore delighted to once again welcome Joshua Rozenberg KC (hon), Britain’s most experienced and eminent full-time legal commentator.

The LexisNexis legal awards 2024 were presented in London in March and Joshua was rightly honoured to receive the lifetime contribution award.
In a brief speech of thanks, he assured those present that he had accepted the award on the understanding that it did not mark the end of his contribution to the law — or indeed of his lifetime.
On reflection, though, it seemed a good opportunity to mention some milestones in his career.
He had just completed a term of nearly five years as a non-executive board member of the Law Commission.
On 26 March, he presented a special farewell edition of Law in Action, a programme I launched on Radio 4 almost 40 years ago when he first started covering legal affairs for BBC News. I’m delighted to advise that he is now working on plans to launch his own podcast in the autumn.
