Leadership In the Royal Navy – Portsmouth Event

Friday 14th November to Sunday 16th November, 2014

Following on from last year’s successful event held at Chatham Historic Dockyard, we welcome members, partners and families to attend what promises to be a memorable and fun weekend at Portsmouth – home to HMS Victory, flagship of Admiral Nelson and the oldest commissioned ship in the Royal Navy (by about 190 years!).

Vice Admiral David Steel CBE (Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel and Training) will give a lecture late afternoon on Saturday about the benefits of leadership, personal development and education in the RN and will host a buffet supper in the unique setting of Admiralty House in the Naval Base on Saturday evening. This event has limited availability and is an extremely rare opportunity to visit this historic building. The theme of Vice Admiral Steele’s presentation will be:

• The tangible benefits the Royal Navy gains by investing in leadership, personal development and education.
• To further the understanding of the Royal Navy today and tomorrow.

In addition, Admiral Sir Trevor Soar, former Commander-In-Chief Fleet of the Royal Navy and Chairman of The Leader’s Club will lead a visit to a modern warship, both setting the context of the fleet in relation to the UK’s maritime defences as well as giving insight into commanding and operating the vessel. (The warship involved will be communicated to members in due course and is available subject to operational requirements).

As well as these main highlights, members will have time to visit the other attractions of this historic dockyard, including HMS VICTORY, the Mary Rose, the Submarine Museum, HMS Alliance and many others.

In addition we are working on having a private guided tour of the Mary Rose museum and are actively developing this agenda in the intervening period.

Provisional Programme:

Friday 14 November

• Informal evening (if required a restaurant could be booked but there are plenty of places to eat in Gun Wharf/Old Portsmouth).

Saturday 15 November

• 10:00 – 14:00     Visit Portsmouth Naval Base (this could include HMS VICTORY, The Mary Rose, WARRIOR, Portsmouth Museum, Submarine Museum  at Gosport
• 10:30 – 12:30     For those who pre-book through TLC a Personal Introductory talk from John Lippiett, Chief Executive of The Mary Rose Trust followed by tour of The Mary Rose exhibition.
• 12:30 – 13:30     Informal lunch in one of the Dockyard restaurants
• 14:00 – 15:30     Exclusive visit to operational Warship – Visit to be led by Sir Trevor Soar
• 15:30 – 17:30     Free to change, continue visits
• 17:30 – 18:30     Admiralty House Lecture & Q&A with Vice Admiral David Steel CBE
• 18:30                  Drinks Admiralty House
• 19:00 – 21:00     Buffet supper Admiralty House (Please note the buffet supper is for over 18’s only)  hosted by the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral David Steel CBE.  Access to all the facilities at The National Museum of the Royal Navy & HMS Victory.
• 22:00                  Leave Portsmouth Naval Base

Sunday 16 November

Free to continue visit to Portsmouth Naval Base and surrounding attractions such as:

• New Mary Rose Museum
• HMS Victory
• Warrior 1860
• HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum
• The Royal Marines Museum and Explosion exhibtion
• The Museum of Naval Firepower
• National Museum Royal Navy Portsmouth

• Gunwharf shopping experience

Costs:
Accommodation is at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, The Plaza, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, PO1 3FD – which includes continental breakfast at £94.50 per room per night.

Portsmouth Naval Base General Admission Ticket – valid for one year and allows admission to all exhibits.

Negotiated ticket prices:

• Child (5-15) – £15.75 (Normal price £21.00)
• Senior (60+) – £19.50 (Normal price £26.00)
• Family (up to 5 members to include 2 Adults) – £58.80 (Normal price £78.40)
• Adult – £21.00 (Normal price £28.00)

Therefore costs excluding hotel but to include early bird tickets and dinner are:

Buffet supper, drinks & wine at Admiralty House plus individual discounted dockyard ticket

• (Founder Member early bird (before 30th August)    £65.00 per person
• Non-Member (after 30th August)  £90.00 per person

Booking Arrangements:
Please email patsy.malta57@hotmail.co.uk to register your interest by 27th August to take advantage of the early bird discounts so we have an idea of possible numbers, you are not committed at this stage.

We have negotiated 20 discounted tickets for Portsmouth Naval Base.  These can be secured on a first come first served basis.  Thereafter, tickets will be purchased at the normal price (listed above).

We have negotiated reduced rates with the Holiday Inn Express Hotel at £94.65 per room per night.

Please note the Dockyard and hotel are within walking distance from Portsmouth Harbour Railway station. Ferries to Gosport operate frequently for Submarine Museum.
