Cops, Oxford Academics, and Gen Z: leadership lessons

Principal, St Anne’s College
Helen’s career history is unique as a Head of House in that after completing her PPE degree at St Anne’s in 1986, she went on to serve for 30 years as a police officer in Cheshire Constabulary, Merseyside Police, and the Metropolitan Police Service. During that time she worked shifts and walked the beat in uniform; investigated murders and rapes; commanded firearms and public order operations; and was a member, with command of over 20,000 officers, of the Management Board of the largest UK force, the Met. She also lead investigations into police colleagues and presided at many police misconduct panels. Building and maintaining public and community  confidence in policing was core to all her work, with the support of many dedicated and talented colleagues from a hugely diverse range of backgrounds. Whilst working full-time she also completed a Master’s degree at the University of Manchester, a Postgraduate Certificate at the University of Cambridge, and brought up her two daughters.
In 2016, she was elected by the Fellows of St Anne’s College to become its Principal and Chair of the College’s Governing Body. She also chairs the College’s Equal Opportunities Committee. During her time in the University she has served as Chair of the University’s Admissions Committee and is chair of the Security Sub-Committee and a member of the Astrophoria Foundation Year Steering Group, Finance Committee, and College Contributions Committee. Her greatest satisfaction comes from supporting the academic, professional, and personal development of others. She is regularly invited to speak on leadership topics and policing issues at conferences and in mainstream media.
