Good Leaders look for Solutions not Slogans

Lord David Alton

How appropriate it is that we have invited a man of the highest integrity to talk to us tonight. Not only has David been a firm supporter of TLC from the very start (He presided at our inaugural dinner in Liverpool in February 2010) but he was also generous enough to host the Annual dinner at the House of Lords in 2015: a truly memorable occasion. There have been many occasions where I have sought to ‘pick his brains’ and seek his advice.

His topic for tonight speaks volumes – Good Leaders look for Solutions not Slogans

For 18 years, from 1979, David Alton was a Member of the House of Commons and in 1997 was appointed as an Independent Member of the House of Lords. He sits on its International Relations and Defence Select Committee.

Before entering Parliament he was a teacher and a City Councillor- serving as housing chairman and deputy leader of Liverpool City Council.

He is author or co-author of twelve books  the latest of which is on Genocide, published in June 2022.  Lord Alton is a visiting professor at Liverpool Hope University. He is a Fellow of Liverpool John Moores University and established their Foundation for Citizenship and Roscoe Lectures.

A co-founder of Jubilee Campaign; a recipient of the Thomas More Award for Religious Freedom; in 2022 he was presented with a US award for his work on human rights.

At Westminster he is co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on North Korea, Eritrea, and Pakistan Minorities. In 2018 he visited Pakistan to press for the release of Asia Bibi and in 2019 visited Northern Iraq to collect evidence of Genocide from Yezidis and other minorities. He is Vice Chair of the APPGs on Freedom of Religion Or Belief, Burma, Rohingya, Tibet, Hong Kong and Uyghurs.

In 2021 he was sanctioned by the Chinese Communist Party following his campaigns on Hong Kong and Uyghurs.

In Parliament he has particularly campaigned for human rights and
religious freedom and is currently promoting a Private Members Bill on Genocide determination.
