Leading in a Crisis
Heathrow Airport is a not only a 20bn infrastructure business, as the world’s best connected hub and the UK’s biggest port, it is also a critical national asset. The issues faced with heading up a large, complex and high profile business can indeed be challenging.
John gained a formidable reputation for his skill and leadership in turning round Heathrow and for leading it through the pandemic, before he retired in October 2023 after nearly 10 years at the top.
John will discuss the challenges of leading in a crisis with particular focus on the pandemic but including other aspects of crisis management.
His roles in relation to sustainability will clearly be of great interest as we relect upon the challenges of Net Zero.
Biography
As a result of John’s leadership as CEO, Heathrow consistently improved service levels for passengers, while reducing costs, and is rated one of the best airports in the world.
Heathrow was named “Sustainable Business of the Year” at the Edie Awards and one of the best companies to work for by the Sunday Times.
John has been a member of DEFRA’s Council for Sustainable Business, a Director of HM King Charles’ Sustainable Markets Initiative, a Commissioner with the Energy Transitions Commission, and a Fellow of Business in the Community.
He is also a Non-Executive Director at Thames Water.and former NED of Thames Tideway.
Before becoming CEO in July 2014, he was Development Director, responsible for delivering the £2.5bn Terminal 2 on time and on budget.
Prior to joining Heathrow, John worked in house building with Taylor Wimpey, in brewing and leisure retail with Bass plc, and as a strategy consultant with LEK.
He has lived and worked in the UK, US, Australia, and the Philippines.
John is married with two daughters.
