Mission Clarity:
Enhancing elite military readiness with human performance systems
Dr Tim Dutton
I had the opportunity to connect with Tim via an introduction from my son-in-law Michael Savege following a presentation Michael had witnessed. And how right he was in suggesting Tim’s experience and knowledge might chime with TLC members. Therefore I contacted Tim (who has naturally joined TLC) to elaborate further and this is what he said.
Millions are invested in selecting, developing, and maintaining the UK’s elite military forces. Beyond this tangible investment, operators develop an ‘untrainable’ skillset through operational experience — a level of expertise that is difficult to quantify, but invaluable in high-stakes environments.
An elite military operator, therefore, is more than a soldier — they are a high-value asset. And one that has been invested in heavily by the British taxpayer.
But readiness is not guaranteed. A wide range of stressors — both modifiable and non-modifiable — can compromise an operator’s ability to perform at the level for which they’ve been trained.
That’s where human performance systems come in. By designing interventions that enhance resilience to stressors, we can increase both individual readiness and collective effectiveness.
In this talk, Tim will share how he made sense of a complex, high-stakes environment — navigating its deeply rooted culture and operational demands — to identify the interventions that would move the needle most. By building a focused human performance system aligned with what mattered most, he significantly increased the readiness and resilience of the UK’s elite military forces.
At the heart of it all was a simple principle: clarity drives performance.
