Global Challenges Amidst the New World DisorderÂ
I am delighted that our Immediate Past President will again be starting the year with his review of the Global Challenges we face. Mark stepped down in July last year when Baroness Dido Harding kindly took on the presidency of TLC but I am delighted that he kindly agreed to continue on the ‘Top Team’. His help and encouragement over the last 4 years have been invaluable.
In this event Mark will reflect on the huge geopolitical changes that are evident. I mentioned BRICS to him (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) but he countered with BIISS+ (Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa  and Saudi Arabia)
2025 will be a another particularly challenging year with the continuing conflicts in the Ukraine and Gaza, a new President in USA continuing challenges with China. Here at home we have the Labour Government ‘having’ to impose difficult and unpopular decisions here in the UK. What will be the repercussions? Our legal system is creaking and underfunded and the NHS is always in apparent crisis. And has Social Care once again been booted into ‘the long grass’?
There are huge issues worldwide with global warming, European politics veering to the right. Social media fans the flames of discontent even further. Â
Where to begin? TLC will cover many of these topics this year and we look forward to your support but firstly let us invite Mark to give us his thoughts.
Biography
Mark Sedwill, Baron Sedwill of Sherborne GCMG FRGS LLD, is a cross-bench member of the House of Lords. He is a non-executive director of Rothschilds and Lloyd’s of London Â
Lord Sedwill was Chairman of the G7 Panel on Global Economic Resilience (2020-21), Cabinet Secretary & Head of the Civil Service (2018-20), National Security Adviser (2017-20), Permanent Secretary at the Home Office (2013-17), and British Ambassador and NATO Representative in Afghanistan (2009-11). Before that he had a diplomatic and security career, serving in Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Cyprus and Pakistan.
Educated at St Andrews and Oxford Universities, Lord Sedwill is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Institute of Directors, an Honorary Doctor of Laws at St Andrews University, an Honorary Fellow of Oxford University and of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI. He is President of the Special Forces Club, President of the SBS Association, Chairman of the Atlantic Future Forum, Co-Chair of the Trilateral Commission, a member of the IISS Advisory Council, a Trustee of the RNLI, an Honorary Colonel in the Royal Marines and an Honorary Bencher of Middle Temple. He is also the recipient of several awards and honours for national and international public service.
