The rise of AI and automation is fueling a trend in the US known as The Great Unbossing, where middle managers are being slowly squeezed out of organisations. Technology can empower employees to take on more responsibilities, while AI enables senior leaders to directly connect with their workforce. This raises concerns about potential management job losses and the long-term impact on leadership development.
While AI offers productivity gains, questions remain about its actual cost savings and how it will affect workers’ daily tasks. The disappearance of middle management could also hinder the development of future leaders, who traditionally gain crucial experience in those roles.
During this conversation we will consider questions including what is the scale and downsides of this change? Will AI deliver the savings that many predict? If it does, what does that mean for how workers will perform their daily activities? How will future senior leaders gain the necessary leadership experiences for success in a world increasingly of only workers or senior leaders?

He encourages faster adoption of new thinking, while warning of the potential risks created by digital transformation and disruptive technologies.
He is a keen advocate for the need to change our mindsets, not our toolsets, to achieve critical advantages over adversaries and competitors, who increasingly realise their technological benefits at a quicker pace.
Tony has always been a geek and has served as a British Army Infantry Officer on operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, and Northern Ireland. In a critical national role, he supported the military adoption of new technologies and ways of working in Afghanistan, Iraq, and across Africa.
Tony shaped future UK battlefield C4ISR solutions aligning future technological options with commercial approaches across sectors, before joining Microsoft to develop ethical technologies, including AI and mixed realities.
He is now Deloitte UK Partner for Digital Defence, leading on AI adoption with UK MOD, exploiting big data, and digitising delivery operations.
