Living as a Human in an AI World
Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull FRSA
Tim is a longstanding member of TLC and a remarkable man. Clearly a man of faith but also hugely well versed in the field of technology too.
I make no excuses in returning to the world of AI fairly frequently as we seek answers, knowledge and understanding. We are really fortunate that we have within the TLC family some tremendous expertise to help us along the way. Recently, Tim shared a presentation that he had given which I though was ‘just the ticket’ for TLC – and hence tonight.
In an era of rapid technological transformation, what does it mean to be human? This talk will provide a thoughtful examination of the meteoric rise of AI and its profound impact on contemporary life. Tim will examine the intersection of silicon and soul, weighing the great opportunities with the profound challenges. Drawing upon both innovative technical research and enduring perspectives from philosophy and spirituality, his presentation will invite reflection on the fundamental qualities that make us who we are — truth, trust, relationships, creativity, consciousness and spirituality. He will ask whether our very humanity being rewritten by technology. In an AI-dominated world, understanding ourselves has never been more vital.
Biography
The Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull has been called a “true polymath” due to his rare and distinguished combination of expertise in both technology and theology. He holds a doctorate in Computer Science from Durham University, as well as a second doctorate in Theology and Genetic Engineering from King’s College London. Prior to his ordination, Tim was a Chartered Software Engineer, where he pioneered innovative methods in software maintenance, and also served as a lecturer in computer science at Durham University.
Tim is a leading authority at the intersection of faith and contemporary technology. A founding member of the AI Christian Partnership, he is a sought-after speaker on topics including Artificial Intelligence, disinformation, and Christian ethics. Among his notable initiatives are Take Your Vicar to the Lab — which has organised delegations to over twenty research facilities, including CERN — and Where is Truth Now?, a project examining faith-based responses to the challenges of the digital era. Since 2023, he has directed Enabling Leaders, the Church of England’s national leadership development programme dedicated to supporting disabled and neurodivergent clergy and laity.
A member of the General Synod since 2010, Tim also serves on the Church of England’s Mission and Public Affairs Council. He is a published author, contributing regularly to various publications. Tim is currently based at St Albans Cathedral where he also supports individuals discerning a vocation to ordained ministry within the Church of England.
