Dr Peter Patel is a remarkable man. I had the privilege of first meeting him a dozen or more years ago when I was MD of BroadCare (a successful system we had developed to manage, maintain and monitor data within the healthcare market place). As you will see from his bio below he was a potential customer – and indeed he proved to be. It was at the same time I was developing further my ideas behind The Leaders Club and discussed it with Peter and he was more than supportive. But never mind my vision of TLC, it was his vision of Saving Lines International that was truly remarkable.
It is this vision that I want to share with you in this presentation.
Dr Peter (Pankaj) Patel is a scientist with 22-year career in the biomedical and healthcare sector, showcasing extensive senior-level teaching, management, and leadership expertise in academia and industry. His scientific background led to him working in the biomedical and health care sectors bringing significant senior level teaching, management and leadership experience in academia and industry. He retired from fulltime UK NHS work in 2017 to lead on international work in Disaster medicine and improving Primary Care for developing countries with a focus on Commonwealth Countries.
Peter is founder of Saving Lives International which has evolved from humanitarian work started by him as a Rotarian of Rotary Club of Birmingham in 1993. After 30 years of post-disaster recovery programmes focused on health sector, ‘Saving Lives International’ was established as an independent charity in May 2023.
The Faculty of Disaster Medicine – India and Nepal (FDMIN) is the flagship UK programme of Saving Lives International, established in 2015 in partnership with National Association of Primary Care (NAPC), development support from UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. This innovative vision has emerged from over 20 years of investment in humanitarian programmes in India and the sub-continent with focus on health care of badly affected and displaced population from wide range of disasters.
Peter is visiting Professor of Disaster Medicine at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) – Deemed University, Chennai, and Joint Chair of the Academic Development Board for Disaster Medicine at both SRIHER and Amrita Institute of Higher Education, Kochi where he plays a pivotal role in shaping academic programs in disaster medicine. He has also established partnership with Nepal Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine, based in Kathmandu.
Peter’s expertise and leadership extend to teaching disaster medicine planning, preparedness, response, and recovery phases, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, global health security, epidemics, pandemics, and disaster medical response in mass gatherings.
Beyond disaster medicine, Peter’s commitment to humanitarian work is exemplified by his two-year tenure as the Assistant Governor of Rotary International – District 1060. He received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship in 1996 from the Rotary Club of Birmingham for exceptional contributions to humanitarian work in India. Special recognition from BASICS, UK, further acknowledges his exceptional work in the development of pre-hospital emergency care.
Peter is, as said a remarkable man made even more so in that he has cancer and has recently had both chemotherapy and subsequently radiotherapy.
